Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of the most common taxes businesses encounter, yet it is also one of the easiest to get wrong. Whether you are issuing an invoice, pricing a product for an online store, or checking a receipt from a supplier, you constantly need to move between net prices (before tax) and gross prices (after tax). Getting that conversion wrong by even a decimal point can mean lost margins, incorrect filings, or awkward conversations with clients.
That is exactly why we built the free VAT Calculator. It works in both directions: add VAT to a net price to find the gross total, or remove VAT from a gross price to recover the net amount and the tax hidden inside it. With country presets covering Thailand 7%, UK 20%, Germany 19%, and nine more jurisdictions — plus a fully custom rate — you get instant, accurate results with zero effort.
VAT rates differ wildly around the world, from Thailand's 7% to Sweden's 25%, and knowing which rate applies is only half the battle. The other half is knowing how to apply it correctly, especially when doing reverse VAT calculations on prices that already include tax. This guide explains both directions of the calculation, walks through real examples, and shows you how to use the tool to keep your numbers right every time.
Why Use the VAT Calculator?
- Instant, error-free results — no mental math, no spreadsheet formulas, no rounding mistakes. Type an amount, pick a rate, and both the VAT and the total appear immediately.
- Two modes for every situation — Add VAT converts a net price to gross (perfect for invoicing), while Remove VAT extracts the tax from a gross price (perfect for reverse VAT and expense checks).
- 13 country presets — Thailand 7%, UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain 21%, Ireland 23%, Netherlands 21%, Sweden 25%, Norway 25%, Australia 10%, South Africa 15%, and a custom rate for everything else.
- 100% client-side and private — all calculations happen in your browser. No data is ever sent to a server, so your prices and figures never leave your device.
- Free, no sign-up, no limits — use it as many times as you like, on any device, with no account and no paywall.
- Copy and download results — export your calculation in one click for invoices, records, or spreadsheets.
Key Features
| Feature | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Add VAT mode | Converts a net (exclusive) price to a gross (inclusive) price by adding VAT at your chosen rate |
| Remove VAT mode | Extracts VAT from a gross price, returning the net amount and the VAT component (reverse VAT) |
| Country presets | One-click selection of VAT rates for 13 countries, from Thailand 7% to Sweden 25% |
| Custom rate | Enter any VAT percentage for jurisdictions or special rates not in the preset list |
| Live results panel | Shows Net Amount, VAT Amount, and Gross Amount updating instantly as you type |
| Copy & download | Copy the full result to the clipboard or download it for your records |
Beyond the table, a few details make the tool especially handy. Results update live with every keystroke, so there is no Calculate button to hunt for. The two modes are clearly labelled Add VAT and Remove VAT, which removes the classic confusion between tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive pricing. And because everything runs client-side, you can use it with sensitive figures — quotes, payroll numbers, confidential invoices — without worrying about where the data goes.
How to Use the VAT Calculator
- Open the VAT Calculator in your browser — no sign-up needed.
- Choose the mode: Add VAT if your price does not include tax yet, or Remove VAT if the price you have already includes tax.
- Select a country preset (for example, Thailand at 7%) or enter a custom rate.
- Type the amount — net if adding VAT, gross if removing VAT.
- Read the live results: Net Amount, VAT Amount, and Gross Amount. Copy or download them if needed.
How VAT Calculation Works
VAT math is simple once you understand which number you are starting from. The key distinction is between the net price, which excludes VAT, and the gross price, which includes it.
Adding VAT (net to gross). When you know the price before tax, the VAT is the net price multiplied by the rate:
VAT = net × (rate / 100) gross = net + VAT
Take Thailand's 7% rate with a net price of ฿1,000:
VAT = 1,000 × (7 / 100) = ฿70 gross = 1,000 + 70 = ฿1,070
So a ฿1,000 net price becomes ฿1,070 gross. For the UK's 20% rate with a net price of £200:
VAT = 200 × (20 / 100) = £40 gross = 200 + 40 = £240
Removing VAT (gross to net, reverse VAT). When the price you have already includes VAT — a shop receipt, a supplier invoice, a price tag — you cannot simply multiply by the rate. The gross price is 100% plus the rate, so you must divide:
net = gross / (1 + rate / 100) VAT = gross − net
Take a UK gross price of £240 at 20%:
net = 240 / (1 + 20 / 100) = 240 / 1.20 = £200 VAT = 240 − 200 = £40
And a Thai gross price of ฿1,070 at 7%:
net = 1,070 / (1 + 7 / 100) = 1,070 / 1.07 = ฿1,000 VAT = 1,070 − 1,000 = ฿70
The most common mistake is treating reverse VAT like forward VAT — subtracting 20% from a gross price instead of dividing by 1.20. That error overstates the VAT and understates the net amount, which can throw off profit margins and tax filings. The calculator handles this division automatically, so you never have to think about it.
Practical Use Cases
Invoicing clients
When you issue an invoice, the total must reflect the correct VAT. If your quoted fee is net of tax, add the applicable rate to arrive at the gross amount the client will pay. For example, a Thai freelancer quoting ฿15,000 net should invoice ฿16,050 gross at 7% — and the VAT Calculator shows that breakdown in a second, ready to copy into the invoice.
E-commerce pricing
Online sellers must decide whether displayed prices include VAT, and that decision changes the math. If you sell a product at £50 including UK VAT, the Remove VAT mode shows the net revenue is £41.67 and the VAT owed is £8.33. If you price net instead, Add VAT mode shows the customer pays £60 gross. Knowing both directions keeps your listed prices compliant and your margins intact.
Freelancer and contractor billing
Freelancers working across borders often deal with multiple rates in the same month — one client in Germany at 19%, another in Ireland at 23%. The country presets make switching rates effortless, and the copy function drops the exact figures into your invoice template. The same calculation also tells you how much VAT you are collecting on behalf of the tax authority, so nothing comes as a surprise at filing time.
Expense reconciliation
When you review receipts from suppliers, the amounts are almost always gross — they include VAT. To record the correct expense and reclaim the input VAT, you need the net amount and the tax component. Remove VAT mode reverses any gross figure in seconds, which is especially valuable in countries like Sweden or Norway where a 25% rate makes the embedded tax a significant chunk of every receipt.
Best Practices for VAT Calculation
- Always confirm the applicable rate — VAT rates differ by country, product category, and sometimes by region. Check the current rate for your jurisdiction before relying on a preset.
- Know which number you are starting from — decide whether your source figure is net or gross first. Mixing them up is the single biggest source of VAT errors.
- Use the correct mode for the direction — Add VAT for net-to-gross, Remove VAT for gross-to-net. Reverse VAT is a division, not a subtraction.
- Round consistently — settle on a rounding convention (for example, round to two decimals on the final total) and apply it the same way on invoices and returns.
- Keep records of every calculation — download or copy each result so you have a trail of how totals were built, which is invaluable during audits.
- Recheck foreign-currency conversions — when dealing with cross-border transactions, convert to the local currency before applying VAT, and confirm whether the rate applies to the converted amount.
