What is Mandelbrot Set Explorer?
The Mandelbrot Set Explorer is an interactive tool that renders the Mandelbrot fractal directly in your browser. Using the escape-time algorithm, it colors each point in the complex plane according to how quickly the sequence z = z squared plus c escapes to infinity. The result is an infinitely zoomable image where spirals, seahorses, and miniature copies of the whole set appear at every scale.
Key Benefits
- Infinite zoom reveals endless self-similar detail at the boundary
- Five color palettes and smooth coloring produce striking visuals
- Adjustable iteration depth keeps the fractal crisp at deep zoom levels
- Famous-location presets jump straight to the most beautiful spots
- Everything runs locally in your browser, no upload or server needed
Common Use Cases
- β’Teaching complex numbers, iteration, and chaos theory
- β’Generating fractal artwork and desktop wallpapers
- β’Exploring the connection between simple rules and complex patterns
- β’Stress-testing browser rendering performance with heavy computation
- β’Discovering and sharing beautiful zoom coordinates with friends
How to Use the Mandelbrot Set Explorer
- Pick a color palette and iteration depth: Choose from Fire, Ocean, Psychedelic, Grayscale, or Electric, then drag the Max Iterations slider to balance detail and speed.
- Navigate by clicking: Click any point to zoom in 2x centered on it. Hold Shift and click to zoom out, or use the Zoom In/Out buttons for center zoom.
- Jump to a famous location: Use the Famous Locations buttons to instantly visit Seahorse Valley, Elephant Valley, a Mini-Mandelbrot, or a lightning spiral.
- Inspect and export: Toggle Show coordinates to read the complex value under the cursor. Click Download PNG to save the current fractal image.
Key Features
- Infinite zoom with click-to-center navigation and smooth, continuous coloring
- Five built-in palettes (Fire, Ocean, Psychedelic, Grayscale, Electric)
- Adjustable iteration depth from 32 to 1024 for sharp detail at deep zoom
- Live coordinate readout showing real, imaginary, and escape-iteration values

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Mandelbrot set?
It is the set of complex numbers c for which repeatedly applying z = z squared plus c, starting from z = 0, stays bounded forever. Points inside the set never escape; points outside escape to infinity at different speeds, and that escape speed is what produces the colorful boundary.
How deep can I zoom?
In principle infinitely, but in practice limited by the 64-bit floating-point precision of JavaScript numbers. Around a zoom factor of roughly 1e13 the pixels start to pixelate because neighboring complex values become indistinguishable. Raising the iteration count keeps the boundary crisp at deeper zooms.
Why are there black regions?
Black marks points believed to be inside the set, meaning the iteration never escaped within the chosen max-iteration budget. Increasing Max Iterations can reclassify some borderline points as escaping, revealing more boundary detail.
Is the rendering done on my device?
Yes. Every pixel is computed in your browser using the escape-time algorithm on the CPU, so nothing is uploaded to a server. Deep zooms at high iteration counts are heavier, which is why a higher setting takes longer to render.
