Word Cloud Generator: Visualize Frequent Words from Any Text
Turn an article, transcript, or word list into a collision-free word cloud. Filter stopwords, pick a color theme, and download a high-resolution PNG β all in your browser.
Table of Contents
A long article is easy to skim and still miss which terms actually dominate. A word cloud makes frequency visible: larger type means the word appeared more often. That is useful for interviews, product reviews, lecture notes, survey comments, and any other pile of text where you want a one-glance theme map instead of another spreadsheet of counts.
Our free Word Cloud Generator builds that map in the browser. Paste text, optionally load the built-in example, and the canvas fills with a spiral, collision-free layout. You can cap how many words appear, raise the minimum word length, drop English stopwords, rotate some labels, switch among five palettes, regenerate the layout, copy the top words, or download a 2Γ PNG. Nothing is uploaded.
This guide explains how tokens become sizes, what the controls actually change, and when a cloud is a fair summary versus a pretty picture that hides the long tail.
Why Use Word Cloud Generator?
- Frequency at a glance. The largest labels are the most common remaining tokens after stopword and length filters. You do not have to sort a frequency table first.
- Collision-free placement. Words sit on an Archimedean spiral and skip overlapping boxes, so labels stay readable instead of stacking on top of each other.
- Stopwords stay out of the way. With the filter on, words such as the, and, and you do not swallow the layout. Toggle it off if those function words are the point of the experiment.
- Themes match the audience. Vibrant, Ocean, Forest, Sunset, and Mono palettes cycle through hex colors. Mono uses a dark background so a slide deck does not look like a default white canvas.
- Export without a design tool. Download PNG writes a 1760Γ1040 image (logical 880Γ520 at 2Γ scale) from the same canvas you see on the page.
- Private by default. Tokenization, layout, and export run in JavaScript on your device. Drafts, customer quotes, and internal notes never hit a server.
Key Features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text input | Paste or type; Load Example fills a product/engineering vocabulary sample |
| Color theme | Vibrant, Ocean, Forest, Sunset, Mono (Mono canvas background is #0f172a) |
| Max words | 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, or 200 of the highest-frequency tokens |
| Min word length | 2, 3, 4, or 5 characters (default 3) |
| Stopword filter | Drops a built-in English stopword list when enabled (default on) |
| Rotation | About 22% of longer words (length > 3, not the first word) may draw vertically |
| Regenerate | New random spiral start angles without changing the counts |
| Download PNG | word-cloud-{timestamp}.png at 2Γ resolution |
| Top words | Ranked chips with counts; Copy Top Words puts word Γcount lines on the clipboard |
- Size uses a log scale. Font size interpolates between 14px and about one-ninth of the shorter canvas side using log(count + 1), so a word that appears 40 times does not dwarf everything else as harshly as a linear scale would.
- Tokens are lowercase ASCII words. The parser lowercases the text, normalizes curly quotes, then matches [a-z0-9''-]+. Leading and trailing apostrophes or hyphens are stripped. Thai, CJK, and other scripts will not tokenize as words.
- Unique-word count under the controls is the size of the frequency list after filters, not the number of boxes that fit on the canvas. If placement runs out of room, some selected words stay off the picture.
How to Use
- Open the Word Cloud Generator. Paste an article, transcript, or a list of tags. Click Load Example if you only want to see the layout with sample vocabulary.
- Choose a Color Theme. Leave Filter common stopwords on unless you are studying function words. Set Min Word Length to 4 or 5 if short tokens (ids, codes, api) are crowding the cloud.
- Set Max Words. Start at 75. Drop to 25 for a poster headline; raise toward 150β200 only if the canvas still has empty space after regenerate.
- Optionally enable Allow rotated words for a denser, Wordle-style look, or turn it off for left-to-right labels that are easier to screenshot into a report.
- Click Regenerate until the composition feels balanced, then Download PNG. Use Copy Top Words when you need the ranked list in a spreadsheet or slide notes.
Understanding Word Clouds
A word cloud is a ranked list drawn as type, not a statistical model. The generator counts tokens, sorts by frequency (ties broken alphabetically), takes the top N, then searches for a non-overlapping box along a flattened spiral from the center. Randomness comes from the spiralβs start angle and from which eligible words rotate. Counts do not change when you regenerate; only geometry does.
Stopwords are high-frequency glue in English. Leaving them in makes almost every English paragraph look like a cloud of the and of. The built-in list is compact and English-only. Domain jargon that happens to be a stopword elsewhere (just, also) is filtered too. If a brand name is being dropped, turn the filter off or paste a cleaned list of keywords instead of raw prose.
Minimum length cuts noise such as a, id, and two-letter codes. Raising it from 3 to 4 also drops many abbreviations. Lowering it to 2 is useful for product SKUs or programming tokens that are genuinely two characters.
Rotation trades density for readability. Vertical labels pack into leftover gaps but are slower to scan in a presentation. For print, regenerate a few times with rotation on, then pick the frame where the largest words sit near the center and do not clip the edges.
What a cloud cannot do. It does not detect phrases (user experience becomes user and experience). It does not stem (deploy and deployment stay separate). It does not weigh sentiment. For those jobs, pair the image with a word count or a manual phrase list.
Practical Use Cases
Research interviews and support tickets
Paste a batch of interview notes or ticket subjects. With stopwords on and max words at 50, the largest labels are usually the recurring product areas. Copy the top words into your coding sheet, then keep the PNG for the slide that introduces the themes.
Course notes and reading lists
Drop a chapter or a set of lecture transcripts. Raise min length to 4 so short function-ish tokens disappear. The cloud is a revision map: if a term you expected is tiny, you under-discussed it or used synonyms the tokenizer split.
Marketing copy and reviews
Concatenate public reviews (only text you are allowed to process locally). Ocean or Forest themes sit well on a blog; Sunset works for campaign recaps. Download PNG at 2Γ so the image stays sharp on a retina slide. Do not treat the cloud as proof of βbrand loveβ β it only shows which words were typed often.
Design mockups and filler content
When you need a decorative cloud before real copy exists, paste output from a Lorem Generator or a Random Word Generator. Frequencies will be flatter than natural language, so the sizes look more even β which is often what a mockup wants.
Best Practices
- Clean the paste. Remove navigation chrome, cookie banners, and repeated headers so they do not become fake βtop words.β
- One language per paste when using stopwords. The English stopword list will not strip Thai particles; mixed English/Thai prose will over-weight English glue words if the filter is on.
- Prefer fewer words for slides. 25β50 large labels beat 200 unreadable ones from the back row.
- Regenerate instead of stretching. If the canvas looks sparse, lower max words or turn rotation on. If words fail to place, lower max words rather than shrinking the browser window β layout uses a fixed logical canvas.
- Keep the PNG and the list together. The image is for audiences; the copied top-word list is for analysis. Neither replaces a proper Word Counter when you need totals, reading time, or character limits.
- Do not over-claim. A cloud is an illustration of counts in this paste, not a census of a whole corpus unless you pasted the whole corpus.
Ready to see which words actually dominate your draft? Open the Word Cloud Generator, paste a page of text, pick a theme, and export a PNG you can drop into a deck β without sending the source anywhere.
