What is Depth of Field Calculator?
A Depth of Field (DOF) Calculator computes how much of a scene is acceptably sharp for a given lens setting. Enter focal length, f-number, subject distance and sensor format, and it returns the hyperfocal distance plus the near and far focus limits using the standard thin-lens equations.
Key Benefits
- Set focus confidently for landscapes using the hyperfocal distance
- Choose the aperture that keeps subjects at different distances sharp
- Compare how sensor formats change depth of field with the same lens
Common Use Cases
- •Landscape and street photography zone focusing
- •Group portraits where everyone front to back must be sharp
- •Macro and product work where the DOF plane is only millimeters deep
How to calculate depth of field
- Enter the lens settings: Type your focal length in millimeters, pick the f-number you plan to shoot at, and enter the distance to your subject in meters.
- Choose your sensor: Select the camera format — full frame, APS-C, Micro Four Thirds, 1-inch or medium format — so the calculator uses the right circle of confusion.
- Read the focus limits: Use the hyperfocal, near and far values to set your focus distance, or dial in a smaller aperture when the far limit falls short of your scene.
Key Features
- Hyperfocal distance, near and far focus limits plus total DOF in meters
- Six sensor-format presets with standard circles of confusion
- Automatic infinity detection when focusing at or beyond the hyperfocal distance
- Standard f-stop selector covering f/1.2 through f/16
- Pure client-side math with the classic thin-lens DOF equations
