What is Passport MRZ Parser?
The Passport MRZ Parser decodes the Machine Readable Zone found at the bottom of passport data pages and ID cards. Following ICAO Doc 9303, it supports the TD3 passport booklet format (2 lines of 44 characters) and the TD1 ID card format (3 lines of 30 characters), splitting every field β document type, issuing state, names, document number, nationality, dates, and sex β and recomputing each check digit to prove the data was scanned or typed correctly.
Key Benefits
- Instantly verify all MRZ check digits without manual 7-3-1 math.
- Turn raw OCR scans into clean, structured, copyable fields.
- Detect typos and scan errors before data enters your system.
- Keep sensitive passport data on-device with fully client-side processing.
- Learn the MRZ layout with built-in ICAO specimen samples.
Common Use Cases
- β’Front-desk staff verifying passports at hotels, banks, or car rentals.
- β’KYC and onboarding teams double-checking scanned document data.
- β’Developers building MRZ readers who need a reference decoder.
- β’Trainers and students studying the ICAO 9303 document formats.
- β’Anyone who wants to confirm an MRZ transcription has no typos.
How to Use the Passport MRZ Parser
- Copy the MRZ lines: Find the two or three character lines at the bottom of the passport data page or ID card back, and copy them exactly as printed.
- Paste into the input box: Paste the lines into the MRZ input. Spaces and dashes are stripped automatically; letters are uppercased for you.
- Read the decoded fields: The parser detects TD3 (2 x 44) or TD1 (3 x 30) automatically and shows document number, names, dates, sex, and nationality.
- Check the checksum verdict: Green rows mean the check digit matches the recomputed 7-3-1 value. A red row pinpoints which field likely contains a typo or scan error.
Key Features
- Parses TD3 passport MRZ (2 lines of 44 characters) per ICAO 9303 Part 4.
- Parses TD1 ID card MRZ (3 lines of 30 characters) per ICAO 9303 Part 5.
- Recomputes every check digit with the 7-3-1 weighting and flags mismatches.
- Splits names at the double-filler boundary into surname and given names.
- Resolves YYMMDD dates to full years with a sensible century heuristic.
- Strips spaces and dashes automatically so raw scans paste in cleanly.
