Frequently Asked Questions
How much waste allowance should I add?
Use 10% for simple straight layouts in rectangular rooms, 15% for rooms with lots of corners or obstacles, and 20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Extra spares also help with future repairs since tile batches vary in shade.
Why does grout spacing change the tile count?
Each tile effectively occupies its own size plus half a grout joint on each edge. Wider joints make every tile cover more area, so you need fewer tiles. The calculator adds the full joint width to each tile dimension for an accurate pitch.
How do I find tiles per box?
The box label lists the number of pieces inside (e.g. 8 pcs for large-format tiles, 20+ for small mosaics). If you buy loose tiles, leave the field at 0 and only the tile count is shown.
Can I use this for wall tiles and backsplashes?
Yes. The math is the same — just measure the wall area as length × height and subtract areas you will not tile (windows, cabinets) by reducing the dimensions accordingly.
