What is Video Frame Extractor?
The Video Frame Extractor is a browser-based tool that pulls still images out of video files. Instead of pausing a player at random and taking a blurry screenshot, you can step frame by frame, jump to an exact time or frame number, and export the frame as a crisp PNG or JPG at original or scaled resolution. All processing happens locally with the HTML5 video element and the canvas API.
Key Benefits
- Frame-accurate captures instead of blurry timed screenshots
- Complete privacy β the video never leaves your device
- No installation, no watermarks, no file-size limits from a server
- Flexible output: PNG or JPG, three quality levels, four resolutions
- Batch workflow: capture many frames, download them all at once
Common Use Cases
- β’Grabbing a clean still for a video thumbnail or cover image

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The tool uses the HTML5 video element and the canvas API directly in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
Which video formats are supported?
Any format your browser can natively play, typically MP4 (H.264), WebM, and MOV. If the video preview will not play, the browser cannot decode that codec and you may need to convert the file to MP4 first.
What is the difference between PNG and JPG output?
PNG is lossless, preserving every pixel of the frame β best for documentation, bug reports, and further editing. JPG applies lossy compression for much smaller files, which is fine for quick sharing and thumbnails.
Why does the frame counter not match my editor?
The counter assumes the frame rate you selected. Videos do not always store their true frame rate in metadata, so pick the preset that matches your project (for example 29.97 for NTSC or 25 for PAL) and the frame numbers will line up.
